The Mahjong Hermit appears to challenge the player to an all-or-nothing battle: if the player selects the proper tiles, they receives a bonus. However, if the incorrect tiles are chosen, the player loses a life. The player can also choose not to accept the challenge, in which case the game goes on as usual.

The Mahjong Hermit is a parody of Master Roshi from the Dragonball series, who is also known as the Turtle Hermit (亀仙人). The Mahjong Hermit is almost identical to Roshi in appearance, though without the sunglasses Roshi almost always wears.
